Hard to keep up with

Wow, blogging is difficult to keep up with. Figured I'd drop an update since I haven't in some time.

Obviously the key thing on my mind lately is work. I'm confronting a new challenge currently and it primarily has to do with LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). Essentially it's a top down organizational directory, where you have parent/child relationships and each child attribute can be assigned multiple variables. Bottom line is, it's a pain in my ass. It's a simple enough approach to organizing data but when your dealing with hundreds of thousands of records it can become a little much. Either way, it's good experience and it keeps me interested.

Through this work with LDAP I've been able to play with a few LDAP browsers and administrator tools. Here's some notes on a few that you may find useful:

  • JXplorer

    Java based LDAP browser which is kind of a downer for me but a solid tool none the less. It has your basic functionality and gives you the ability to add certificates to a keystore for secure TLS connections. This is strictly a browser and does not have any advanced functionality such as LDIF exports. You can edit attributes and I believe delete them as well but after using this browser for the past couple months I don't trust it. It loves to freeze up on you and also doesn't mind biting off more than it can chew at times. Proceed with caution.
  • Apache Directory Studio

    Another java based browser, what gives?! Very nice layout and has much more functionality than all the others. First major problem I ran into was the java heap size, go figure... The directory I was working with was extremely large and when I attempted to perform some partial LDIF exports I constantly hit the Java VM memory ceiling. Luckily the tech rep I was working with had a write up showing us how to create an .ini file in the apache studio directory which allowed us to increase the heap size for the app. Once I put the max to 1024mb things ran much much better. Great for performing LDIF batch jobs as well if you need to import/export actionable LDIF files against a directory. Definitely recommend this LDAP browser/admin tool.
  • Softerra LDAP Browser/Administrator

    Didn't get to use this one as much as the others but it seemed solid enough. Not java based as far as I know so that's a plus (can you tell I'm not a java fan yet?). The free edition is limited in what you can do but all in all I had no major complaints about this browser, although time will tell...
On another note.....

I've finally gotten my office put together now so it's much more usable, hopefully I will be spending more time in here and actually start some side projects I've been thinking about. It would also be nice to update my storyline I started over a month ago!!

Anyway, just an update in the life of Cooper, later...

Bored?

A friend of mind stumbled upon this site a while ago and I still find myself going to it whenever I'm terribly bored and want to goof off. I'm not big on chat rooms, but I gotta hand it to these folks, very innovative and entertaining:

http://ff0000.com/

Considering the URL you can see why it's probably not the most memorable site as I tend to locate it by trial and error for about 5-10 minutes. Some instances I go almost a year without going to the site and play a fun game of trying to remember if it had three F's in the URL or two....

Either way, enjoy chatting. I find it more humorous when people are in there and they take it so damn serious...

"GOD! I'm TRYING TO HAVE A SERIOUS CONVERSATION IN THIS MAKE BELIEVE WORLD WHILE MY AVATAR LOOKS LIKE A COLONIAL PROSTITUTE HOPPED UP ON SHROOMS.... I'LL FLY AWAY NOW....."

To make things more interesting there are codes you can use to change your avatar into some rather interesting things, you can find the codes here:

Possible story plot.... thoughts?

I've been thinking about picking up yet another hobby, if I can call it that... Throughout my life I've always had a knack for writing. I had a way of taking a small amount of input and generating enough material behind it you could call it a story. I feel that I've lost a bit of that talent over the years due to that thing we call life... work, bills, responsibilities, etc... I want to try and get back into that creative mode once again and begin writing. So for my first composition I would like to pitch a plot to you that has been bouncing around in my head for some time. So far it's thin, very thin, but as I stated above I feel I can turn it into a rather interesting read. Please let me know what you think:

================================

This story starts out with a very confusing twist. A young man awakens in a world unlike anything he has ever experienced before, familiar yet foreign. His senses are all out of sync; some weak, some strong. The air he begins to breath doesn't feel the same as it used to, nothing feels normal or natural from the tips of his fingers to the souls of his feet. The major problem with this scenario is that he does not remember what it used to feel like at all, all he knows is that it's different. Prior to this point in his life he has no recollection of any individuality; no memories, no history and more importantly no purpose. He begins to open his eyes for what feels like the first time, the light is overwhelming - blinding him as he struggles to focus on his surroundings. Although he cannot make things out quite yet he knows he's not alone, there are other beings hovering over him as if to study him. At that moment he begins to recognize the fact that he isn't standing, he's in a bed. A distant repetitive beeping noise begins to chime in his head as he attempts to speak. Pain from deep within him begins to envelope every inch of him as he lets out a piercing roar. The figures around him scramble when he hears one of them speak, "20 CC's of morphine now! We can't afford to lose another vessel". As quickly as the consciousness came to him it fleeted and the room went dark.

================================

To answer your question, yes there is much more to the plot so far but what I want to know at this point is this very impromptu beginning interesting at all? Does it spark that "I want to know more" feeling from deep within you? I know it's very little to go on, so be honest. Once I get some feedback I will add some more of the pseudo-story.
